![]() The V6-powered 2012 Chevrolet Camaro will feature 323 horsepower, or 11 more ponies than the 2011 model. This feat was accomplished by allowing the 3.6-liter unit to breathe better. Engineers were able to improve intake airflow through extensive simulation and bench testing. By getting more air into the engine, horsepower was increased along with exhaust flow. Additionally, engineers managed to shave 13 pounds from the overall weight of the engine, which ultimately helped improve fuel efficiency. “Reducing engine mass of this magnitude doesn’t happen often,” said Ameer Haider, GM assistant chief engineer for V6 engines. “Engineering usually looks for reduction in terms of grams not pounds. It’s just like removing a set of golf clubs from your car when you don’t need them – ultimately it saves fuel. When combined with other mass reductions, the customer will see better fuel economy over time with better performance.” The 2012 Camaro 2LS model will now boast 30 miles per gallon on the highway, up from an also respectable 29 mpg from the 2011 model. “The new, patented design benefits the customer in all the key areas without any tradeoffs,” said Haider. “Emissions, performance, fuel economy, and noise all improve with the integrated exhaust manifold.” Via: Chevrolet in the news
