During a time filled with fear and uncertainty, we are committed to working together and supporting each other in every way possible. Our communities are no exception and we will continue to take steps to support them during the COVID-19 pandemic. Here are a few of the ways our company and our employees are helping: Ventilator Production We began mass production of the Ventec Life Systems V+Pro critical care ventilator for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services at our Kokomo, Indiana facility in early April. We are scheduled to ship more than 600 ventilators in April and almost half of the 30,000-unit order will be filled by the end of June. The full order will be completed by the end of August, with the capacity to build more ventilators after August if needed. Level 1 Face Masks To address the critical shortage of face masks that help protect workers in essential services across the country, GM launched a rapid-response project to produce masks at scale at our manufacturing plant in Warren, Michigan, where we have an ISO Class 8-equivalent cleanroom. Less than seven days later, the team produced the first sample on the new production line. Once all quality measures are completed, the team expects to deliver the first 20,000 masks to frontline workers the week of April 6. $2.6M in Grant Funding
GM has directed $2.6 million in grant funding to nonprofit organizations across the country, especially where we have employee presence, to address increasing critical needs, including food security, housing assistance, elderly assistance, small business support and at-home education. This includes $1 million to the DonorsChoose.org “Keep Kids Learning” campaign that will provide $1,000 credits for teachers to send resources like food, books, tech and more to their students’ homes. Personal Protective Equipment With a severe shortage of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in our health care system to help treat and fight the spread of COVID-19, GM’s Global Purchasing Supply Chain team began work to find excess PPE from suppliers and GM facilities and redistribute to hospitals in need. The company is also working to find additional material or support producers to scale up their material with our GM supply base. And, we’re collaborating with other companies to do the same. If you have personal supplies at home to spare or have access to purchase these supplies, check your local health system’s website for donation drop-off information. Employee Donation Portal While there are many nonprofits doing critical work across the country, GM has established employee donation portals for two of our partners who are uniquely poised to act: United Way’s 211 call center is a help line to connect families to emergency resources like food, housing and utility assistance. DonorsChoose.org is equipping teachers with resources to support their students during a time of vast uncertainty in the education system. Visit this link to support the effort. SleevesUp Campaign The COVID-19 virus has affected the ability of General Motors and many other organizations to host on-site Red Cross blood drives, but GM employees and others can still give blood in local communities with a simple online pledge as part of the SleevesUp Campaign in partnership with the American Red Cross.
